Axon Bill to kill referendum vote with Arizona Senate as Mayor Borowsky maintains opposition
Staff Writer | Mayor of Scottsdale
Scottsdale Mayor Lisa Borowsky is looking at all legal options in response to Senate Bill 1543 advancing out of the Arizona House of Representatives last week.
“This legislation undermines the democratic process by nullifying 26,000-plus signatures of concerned Scottsdale residents, collected by grassroots activists, to refer the matter to the ballot box. Our residents’ voices are being silenced by the legislators who continue to support this bill,” Mayor Borowsky said.
“SB 1543 disregards the rights of Scottsdale residents and sets a troubling precedent depriving citizens of their constitutionally proscribed election based on the demands of a single corporation. This is shocking.”
Scottsdale Mayor Borowsky remains steadfast in objection to SB 1543 and the efforts that compromise the integrity of the city’s ability to oversee zoning — and the integrity of the Arizona referendum process.
“I call on residents to hold the Arizona Senate accountable as Scottsdale deserves an opportunity to work with Axon to identify a mutually agreeable resolution,” Mayor Borowsky said.
The mayor urges the state senate to respect the autonomy of municipal government and, importantly, Scottsdale residents to oversee land-use decisions.
