Scottsdale is unveiling a new pedestrian underpass found along the Indian Bend Multiuse Path, which officials say is improving safety and traffic flow at the busy intersection of Hayden and Chaparral roads.
Scottsdale Mayor Lisa Borowsky agrees.
“One of the innovative things Scottsdale is known for is the Indian Bend Wash and this underpass makes it safer,” said Mayor Lisa Borowsky following the celebratory even held recently.
“This is an exciting project for the more than 1.5 million residents and visitors who use the city’s multiuse path system each year and with the addition of this underpass, it makes us all safer.”
The $5 million project, which was finished in nine months, reduces conflicts between pedestrians, cyclists, and vehicles. Scottsdale transportation officials report that by diverting foot and bike traffic below Chaparral Road, it allows for longer green-light times for motorists.
“The underpass provides uninterrupted travel for bicyclists and pedestrians along the Indian Bend Wash,” said Mark Melnychenko, Scottsdale’s transportation and streets director. “The below-grade crossing will increase safety by reducing conflicts between pedestrians and motorists at the crosswalk and will provide longer green-light times for vehicles headed east onto Chaparral Road.”
Funded by federal grants and Scottsdale’s Transportation Sales Tax, the project also included sidewalk and path modifications near the intersection.
