The month of June marks several milestones in Scottsdale’s history as we celebrate the McDowell Sonoran Preserve.
Today, all 30,500 acres, or 48 square miles — more than 25% of our city’s total acreage — is fully owned by the citizens of Scottsdale. This vast expanse of pristine Sonoran Desert, a treasure beyond measure, belongs to the people of Scottsdale.
In order to truly appreciate the scale of this investment it is to be proud to think of the 11 trailheads that serve as gateways, inviting residents and visitors alike to explore over 230 miles of non-motorized trails. Each trailhead, each mile of trail, represents not just physical infrastructure but also a pathway to nature, to tranquility, and to community.
The McDowell Sonoran Preserve is not just land, it is a living, breathing part of Scottsdale’s identity.
Our journey to this day has been one of collaboration, perseverance, and shared vision. It required the support of countless individuals, community groups, and city leaders who understood the profound importance of preserving this natural legacy. Their commitment to this long-term goal has secured a future where the beauty and ecological integrity of the Sonoran Desert will be cherished and protected for generations to come.
The McDowell Sonoran Preserve, and all its assets are, now and forever held in trust for the enjoyment of both current and future generations. This means our children, and their children, will have the opportunity to experience the same breathtaking landscapes and diverse ecosystems that we cherish today.
Here are two facts that mark the accomplishments of June for the residents of Scottsdale:
- In June 1995 Gov. Fife Symington unveiled the Arizona Preserve Initiative and in June 1995, Scottsdale City Council canvassed the election results on the first sales tax to acquire land in the McDowell Sonoran.
- In June 2008, the long-awaited Gateway to the Preserve broke ground and in June 2013, the Brown’s Ranch Trailhead opened.
This is a legacy we leave, a testament to what can be achieved when a community unites behind a common purpose. The McDowell Sonoran Preserve is a place for reflection, recreation, and education. It is a space where we can reconnect with nature and with ourselves.
We are safeguarding not just land but our quality of life and the spirit of our city.
As Mayor, I am honored to witness this momentous occasion. I am gratified by everyone who has contributed to making this dream a reality. The McDowell Sonoran Preserve is a crown jewel, a priceless asset that will be enjoyed for generations to come.
